Why Is That?

In his most recent blog post, here, Mr. McGoo brought up a conversation we had the other night in which I stated that according to my Human Growth & Development Psychology class, "widowers are FOUR times more likely to get remarried than widows".

Ps. If you haven't read Mr. McGoo's post yet, you should - you might have PLENTY to comment on considering even the title of the post: Who Wears the Pants.

But anyway, this is my question... considering this statistic: widowers (men) are four times more likely to get remarried than widows (women)... what do YOU think is the reason that men are much more likely to remarry after the death of their spouse than women?

I know what the book said and what my thoughts are on the matter - but I'm curious of yours. Bring on the comments...

Man, I can't believe that Anonymous male chavinist pig. What a creep. His wife is surely blest.

As I read it, I thought it was a setup to a joke. To me, a widower would be the person that died. Widower/Widowee like Employer/Employee. Kind of like that "where would they bury the survivors?" joke... Anywho, once I kept reading I realized, "Oh wait! This is something real!"

I think that men just like being taken care of so they look for that again. Whereas women are sick of having to take care of someone so they choose to hang out alone for their remaining years.

All joking aside, I think it is because that is the way God designed men--they need companionship. He said it was not good for man to be alone and that he needed a helper...enter wife. I think the statistic would be higher for women to remarry after the death of a spouse if our culture hadn't so conditioned women that all men are pigs and that they don't "need" a man--the "i can take care of myself just fine" mindset. *Sorry for the so serious response. I just have a real problem with feminist ideology! :) Ephesians 5:22-25 has the answers!

typically men die younger. So, when all the old folks are old - there are a lot more women than men. Men have the stats going for them - there are a lot more old ladies around to choose from. could that be it? I feel like this is from a movie.

Thanks for your answers folks!

Rachael is definitely on the right track... Well done!

The Psych books talks about how men often lack intimate relationships, companionship outside of their spouse. Women, however, tend to share with girlfriends and are able to get that aspect of their life fulfilled a bit through personal friendships with other ladies. Men do not tend to share intimately with other men, therefore the need to have companionship arises more strongly and they get married again to have such companionship!

Rachael - your discussion about the Biblical context is AWESOME! I concur with your assessment!
